 Introduction

The process of securing computers from being damaged due to heat, smoke, dust, dirt, and theft is known as computer security. It includes the securing of computer hardware and software. Computer security is essential for the protection of computer hardware and software and maintaining the working condition of computers.

Types of computer security

On the basis of components of computer system there are two types of computer security:

  1. Hardware security.

  2. Software security.

Hardware Security

The protection of computer hardware devices from being damaged due to heat and theft is known as hardware security. It is the securing of hardware parts of the computer. Following measures can be applied for Hardware security.

  1.  Regular maintenance of computer

  2.  Use of ID card

  3.  Insurance

  4.  Free from dust and dirt

  5.  Protection from fire

  6.  Protection from theft

  7.  Use of AC system

  8. Use of power protection devices

Regular maintenance

It is a necessary and important security measure to increase the life of computers. Regular cleaning and maintaining of the computer system can be done to protect our computer hardware system. Dust or vacuum cleaners can be used to clean external and internal hardware devices of the computer for the regular cleaning and maintenance of the computer.

Use of ID card

The use of an ID card in the computer room is necessary for authorized users. It is an important security measure that helps to protect computers from theft and other losses. This measure only allows the authorized person to access the computer room that ensures computer security.

Insurance

It is another security measure to protect computer hardware. An organization or any individual can get compensation for the loss of the computer from the insurance company. The insurance company will cover all the expenses of the losses of the computers caused by theft, fire, or any other accident.

Free from dust and dirt

Computers must be free from dust and dirt for proper functioning as they can cause overheating which may lead to the destruction of hardware devices. There should be regular cleaning and maintenance to make the computer free from dust and dirt.

 Protection from fire

It is one of the important hardware security measures to protect our computers. Fire can be caused due to various reasons such as short circuits, voltage fluctuations, overload, etc. To prevent fire, the room must have proper wiring and an alarm system to reduce damage caused by fire anytime.

Protection from theft

The computer is an expensive device so it should be kept in a safe and secure room in order to prevent theft. The computer room must be accessed by an authorized person and monitored by CCTV cameras to prevent theft.

Use of AC system

Proper maintenance of temperature helps to protect computer hardware. Computers in AC rooms get relief in overheating problems that will result in protection of hardware damages that may cause due to overheating.

Use of power protection devices

Using different power protection devices will help to protect computer hardware from being damaged due to heat and voltage fluctuations. Power protection devices such as UPS, spike guard, voltage stabilizer, etc. can be used for protecting computers from high voltage, overload, and power fluctuations; this will result in the protection of computer systems.

Data and software security

The protection of computer data and software from being damaged or lost is known as software security.  It is essential to secure computer data and programs in order to maintain the proper functioning of computer systems.

The different measures to protect our computer data and software are listed below:

  1.  Keeping password

  2.  Regular virus scanning

  3.  Backup

  4.  Using ScanDisk

  5.  Use of firewall

  6.  Applying the fragmentation

Keeping password

A password is a secret word or string that gives an authorized user access to a particular program or system. Passwords can be used to protect computers by locking the system with a password that leads to the production of the data and software.

Regular virus scanning

Using an antivirus is one of the important measures to protect our computer data and software. Regular virus scanning should be done to detect and remove viruses from computers. This tool or software is essential for protecting the data and information of the computer systems.

Backup

Making duplicate copies of data and software for future use in case of data loss is known as a backup. We can use different backup software for creating backup files and can secure data and software. Backup is necessary to restore lost or deleted files and applications.

Using Scandisk

Scandisk is the utility software that detects and repairs the error of a hard disk. It is necessary to use the Scandisk program regularly in order to maintain proper working conditions of hard disks and to protect its data.

Use of firewall

A firewall is also a software security measure that prevents unauthorized users from accessing the computer or network. Unauthorized access helps to protect from data loss that may be caused by a virus attack or cyber attack.

Applying defragmentation

Defragmentation is the process of combining the scattered parts of a file back to a single file and storing them in a single location. Due to frequent creating, deleting, and modifying files fragmentation occurs. Fragmentation is the process of scattering the parts of a file to different locations. It causes slow performance of the PC and also results in data loss. So defragmentation is necessary to gather the fragmented files together and to prevent data loss as well as to clean up spaces and speed up computer performance.
